Grimsby 0-0 Macclesfield (5-4 on penalties): Chelsea await Mariners in Carabao Cup

Grimsby goalkeeper James McKeown was making his 384th appearance for the club

Grimsby Town beat Macclesfield Town 5-4 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes to set up a third-round Carabao Cup tie against Premier League side Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Keeper James McKeown was the hero, saving two spot-kicks in the shootout.

The decisive save came in sudden death from Connor Kirby after Elliott Whitehouse had put the hosts ahead.

The Mariners’ game against last season’s League Cup runners-up will be played on Wednesday, 25 September.

Both League Two clubs had chances to progress to a lucrative trip to Chelsea after the original second-round tie was abandoned on 27 August when heavy rainfall just before half-time left the field waterlogged at Blundell Park.

Kirby and Miles Welch-Hayes were both off target for Macc in the first half and Theo Archibald also forced a good stop from McKeown.

A close-range Moses Ogbu strike was an near as Grimsby came to scoring but they improved after the interval and Ogbu, Matt Green and James Hanson all wasted good openings.

But the misses did not matter as Grimsby captain McKeown denied both Fraser Horsfall and Kirby to earn his side a vital win.
