Liverpool squad laud show of teamwork & Bobby’s “wing mirrors” as record winning streak continues
Liverpool players were quick to celebrate another three points in the bag after overcoming a “tough” Newcastle outfit to the tune of 3-1.
Jurgen Klopp’s side continued to swat away the opposition as their unbeaten start to the Premier League season rumbled on with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle.
The Reds found themselves unexpectedly behind early in proceedings as Jetro Willems capitalised on Liverpool’s sluggish start, but once they found their rhythm there was little the Magpies could do to stop another three points from remaining at Anfield.
A Sadio Mane double inside 12 minutes in the latter stages of the opening term put Liverpool in the ascendency and it remained that way as Mohamed Salah added the finishing touches to seal yet another win.
And although Liverpool clinched the three points in the end with relative ease, a major talking point to emerge from the game was Joel Matip being denied a penalty by the on-field referee and VAR – despite clearly being manhandled in the box during an attempt on goal.
Speaking to LFCTV after the game, Gini Wijnaldum revealed he immediately approached the referee who confirmed a check had in fact taken place and that no foul play was found – much to the Liverpool faithful’s dismay.
Moreover, the Dutchman was also full of praise for the influence of Liverpool’s attacking trio and the teamwork display throughout the squad which allows every player to shine:
“I asked the ref if it was a penalty and he said they already checked it and it wasn’t a penalty, and so you have to keep on going.
“Like the manager said before, in the Premier League every opponent is difficult, so we knew it was going to be tough. Unfortunately, we were 1-0 behind but I think we fixed it quick.
“But even in the second half you could see how difficult it was because they created a few chances to score for 2-2, but I think overall we managed to defend them quite well and we scored [to make it] 3-1 and we won the game.
“[On Mane’s 26th league goal since the start of last season] That shows how good he is. Today he was important with two goals, but Mo was important, and Bobby had a really big impact on the game – they are all important.
“But I think overall the whole team played together to let them perform as good as possible – it’s teamwork in a game like football and we’re just trying to do the best we can to help each other.”
Taking to Instagram following the game, both full-backs were quick to celebrate five wins from five after picking up another “good 3 points”:

It was a case of “let’s keep doing it” for Fabinho, while Adrian was in the mood for a bit of cricket terminology with Liverpool “14 not out” as their record winning streak continued:
Gini Wijnaldum was full of gratitude for the Liverpool faithful after an eventful clash, and for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain it was a momentous occasion as not only was it his 50th outing for “this special club,” but it was also his first start at Anfield in 17 months:
And James Milner was left in awe of the telepathy on show from the Reds’ prolific attacking trio, leading him to suggest “Bobby must have wing mirrors” – and, really, who could argue otherwise:
While Liverpool picked up from where they left off straight after the international break, the Reds will have little time to revel in their 14th successive topflight victory as a trip to Italy now awaits.
Klopp’s side will start the defence of their European crown with a trip to Stadio San Paolo to meet Napoli in the first group game of their Champions League campaign on Tuesday.
