Three-way battle emerging for Loris Karius’ future after goalkeeper contacts Liverpool

Loris Karius‘ two-year loan in Turkey could be cut short this summer after it was reported he has asked Liverpool to terminate his move.

The German goalkeeper has endured a difficult past 12 months and it doesn’t appear to be easing, with his future once more uncertain.

Besiktas made the move for him last summer, agreeing a two-year loan with a permanent deal built into the contract if he hits a certain number of appearances for the Super Lig side.

Meanwhile, Liverpool signed Alisson Becker who has impressed hugely, leaving Karius with little hope of an Anfield return after an up-and-down couple of years on Merseyside, culminating in the disastrous 2018 Champions League final.

But Karius’ time with Besiktas has been constantly plagued by rumours of dissatisfaction, both on his part and from the club.

That seems to have come to a head now with Turkish outlet Turkiye Gazetesi reporting that Karius has contacted Liverpool, asking to end his loan this summer.

Earlier in the season it was rumoured that Besiktas were the ones who wanted to end the loan spell early, before they publicly rejected that notion.

More recently, though, manager Senol Gunes questioned the ‘keeper’s motivation and enthusiasm, saying he’d have played an alternative had one been available.

And, just last week, it emerged that Karius had contacted FIFA after not being paid by his loan club for four months.

While it remains to be seen how the situation with Besiktas is resolved, the same report also suggests there is interest in Karius from the Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt—on the fringes of the Champions League places, with Kevin Trapp as their No. 1—are said to be keen on his services, as well as promoted side Fortuna Dusseldorf, who look set to stay up this term.

A return to Germany may prove to be the best option for Karius as he looks to get his career back on track, as he has no prospect of being a Liverpool regular again and the switch to Turkey does not seem to have helped his confidence or consistency at all.
