Owen hits back at criticism over Rashford comments: ‘get real’

Michael Owen has hit back at criticism received from fans on social media after he made a comment over an injury to Marcus Rashford during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

The Red Devils were forced into three substitutes before half-time with Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all being replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the interval.

At one point Rashford had looked like he needed to be replaced too as he hobbled around on a sore ankle following a strong challenge by Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

And before the second half started, Owen made some controversial comments that sparked a reaction on social media.

“I tell you what, if I was Jurgen Klopp in that dressing room at half-time with Manchester United not being able to bring on another substitute,” Owen said. “I’d be saying ‘Right, First person, first opportunity, go and kick Rashford on the ankle that he has been limping on’.”

The former United and Liverpool striker defended his comments on Twitter, saying: “Hadn’t realised there were so many angels here on Twitter. For everyone in uproar over my comments yesterday, get real.

“As an ex-player I am employed to give my views and insights into what happens at football clubs all over the land.”
