Champions League: The New Saints 2-2 Feronikeli

Greg Draper won and scored a penalty to put New Saints in front

The New Saints conceded two late goals at home against Feronikeli to leave their Champions League first qualifying round tie hanging in the balance.

The Welsh took control when Greg Draper drew a foul from Lapidar Lladrovci to win the penalty he then scored.

Aeron Edwards doubled the lead when he poked home from Joash Nembhard’s flick.

But in the final moments Mevlan Zeka headed in a cross for the Kosovans, before Astrit Fazliu scored from the spot after Simon Spender’s handball.

With those two away goals conceded at Park Hall, the pressure is now on Saints to try and win the return leg in Pristina on 16 July.

Saints have qualified for the Champions League for the eighth season running but have never progressed beyond the third qualifying round.

The New Saints manager Scott Ruscoe told BBC Sport Wales:

“It’s more than a little bit disappointing because we’re two up and six minutes to go maybe.

“We’re dropping and we’re deeper and deeper, yes because of the substitutions – we had to make them because they’re enforced – but we’ve got to be more streetwise and control the game more.

“I was shouting and screaming to try to do it but it’s easier said than done, I’ve been in that situation where you drop and drop and you’re going to entice them onto you.

“But there’s more to come, we’ve gone away from home before and got results and there’s no reason we can’t do it again.”
