Liverpool keeper Kamil Grabara suffers play-off heartbreak but fans urge him to stay

Liverpool youngster Kamil Grabara has been urged by supporters of AGF Aarhus to stay with the Danish club after an impressive six-month loan spell.

The 20-year-old was sent out on loan to Danish club AGF Aarhus in January after spending the first half of the campaign competing against fellow academy ‘keeper Caoimhin Kelleher for the role of Jurgen Klopp’s third choice stopper.

And the search for first team football in Aarhus proved to be a successful one as Grabara was drafted into the role of No. 1 for AGF’s league campaign at the first opportunity.

Grabara made 16 successive appearances for AGF, keeping six clean sheets and playing a pivotal role in taking the club to the cusp of securing a Europa League qualification spot.

But it was not to be, however, as his side were knocked out of their Danish Superliga playoff semi-final after conceding in the 93rd minute in the second leg, falling to a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Randers FC.

The Polish stopper was rightfully left disappointed for the manner of AGF’s exit, but he was quick to share his gratitude for an “amazing six months” on Instagram as his loan spell came to an end.

But his impressive performances saw AGF fans unfurl a banner asking him to stay at the club during what was to be his last game, a gesture which was also taken to social media as fans flocked to his post to echo the sentiment.

Grabara was duly flattered for the fans’ gesture at the stadium but he refused to be drawn into speculation over his future when he spoke to Eurosport following Sunday’s game.

The Pole was not short on confidence either when discussing his rank among goalkeepers in the Danish Superliga.

“I can’t say that yet. But as you can see, the [AGF fans] have the best goalkeeper in the Super League. I appreciate it [the banner] and I think I proved it in my performance, but unfortunately I couldn’t save everything.

“I think it’s obvious, everyone can see it. I have the highest save percentage.”

The loan spell with AGF looks to have been the perfect place for Grabara’s continued development, and while his long-term future remains unknown, he will no doubt look to translate his success in a first-team environment to Liverpool over the summer.
