Manchester United players are facing a pay cut of 25 per cent if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League, according to reports.
The Red Devils are in a four-way battle with Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal for the final two Champions League places in the Premier League with Liverpool and Manchester City fighting it out for the title.
And The Sun claims that the way United have ‘structured’ deals for players in their squad means they will lose a quarter of their wages next season if they don’t reach the Champions League.
Real Madrid have been linked heavily with a move for Paul Pogba in recent weeks and the report adds that the potential pay cuts will ‘encourage’ the Spanish giants ‘in their pursuit of Pogba’.
The La Liga outfit will ‘pounce’ for Pogba if the Red Devils can only claim a Europa League place despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitting he can’t see the Frenchman playing for another club next season.
When United won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho, Pogba’s wages were boosted up to £300,000-a-week but they could now take a hit if the club don’t reach their goals.
The Red Devils are three points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with Solskjaer recently admitting they will probably have to win five out of their last six matches to take a spot in the top four.
