Man Utd legend hits back at LvG over Solskjaer criticism

Peter Schmeichel has hailed the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis as “fantastic” and hit out at Louis van Gaal over his recent comments criticising the Norwegian.

Solskjaer was finally given the permanent manager’s job on Thursday after almost four months as caretaker boss following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.

However, despite United’s unbelievable turnaround in fortunes since his arrival, Van Gaal reckons Solskjaer plays similar football to his predecessor Mourinho.

On Wednesday, Van Gaal said: “The coach after me [Mourinho] changed to park-the-bus tactics and played on the counter. Now there is another coach who parks the bus and plays on the counter.”

However, Schmeichel thinks that is nonsense and has praised the work Solskjaer has done to get fans “excited” about United again.

“Ole has done fantastically well,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.

“The team has broken records, scored goals. I’ve seen people, a former manager, criticising him for playing like Mourinho. I have no idea where he has got that from.

“Ole has been very positive and has done exactly what the fans want. It’s a good day.

“From a Manchester United fan’s perspective it is a great appointment. It offers so many things in the short term that we haven’t seen for a long time.

“It’s exciting watching Manchester United. It’s back. It’s been gone for a little bit.

“You’re excited to go and watch some of the players that are performing so well now under Ole, that didn’t perform so well under the previous managers.

“I have to credit the club for the timing and also the bravery for doing this.

“I think it’s a fantastic appointment and it’s a great opportunity to bring a lot of Manchester United back to Manchester United.”
