Prosecution to seek retrial after jury fail to convict David Duckenfield

After eight days of deliberation, the jury at the Hillsborough trial of former chief superintendent David Duckenfield and former Sheffield Wednesday secretary Graham Mackrell have delivered their verdicts.

They found Mackrell guilty of breaching his duty of safety over the allocation of seven turnstiles for all 10,100 people standing to support Liverpool at the Leppings Lane end.

However, the jury were unable to reach a verdict on Duckenfield on the charge of manslaughter.

The jury were discharged for their service, but the Crown Prosecution Service has said that it will seek a retrial of Duckenfield for gross negligence manslaughter.

Mackrell was found guilty by a majority 10-2.

Judge Sir Peter Openshaw has stressed that reporting restrictions are still in place and that only the verdicts may be reported. No commentary, opinion permitted.
