Italian national Simone Mastrelli has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for his involvement in the attack on Liverpool fan Seán Cox at Anfield last April.
Cox was left with life-changing injuries after he was attacked prior to the Reds’ Champions League clash with AS Roma, with the Irishman still in recovery.
The unprovoked incident had already seen Filippo Lombardi, 21, sentenced for three years for violent disorder, while Daniele Sciusco, 29, was jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Mastrelli pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm to the father-of-three from Ireland, and according to the Press Association has now been jailed for three-and-a-half years.
Cox’s wife, Martina, was present at court for the hearing, days after a GoFundMe page for the 53-year-old passed €1 million.
Speaking in December, she provided a positive update on her husband’s condition, as he remains in care at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.
“He no longer has a feeding tube so is starting to eat and drink again with the help of the wonderful nursing staff,” Cox wrote.
“Seán has some more words and is trying very hard to sing along to familiar songs; these are encouraging and proud steps for us all.”
Liverpool will host a charity game to raise further funds for Cox and his family, with a legends side including Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Jerzy Dudek, Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer taking on the Republic of Ireland legends.
