Rumoured Reds target Timo Werner signs new contract with surprising low release clause
Timo Werner has finally put an end to speculation over his immediate future by signing a new contract…but a low release clause means by January, rumours will almost certainly resume.
The Reds have been linked with the Germany international for well over a year, with his goalscoring, work rate and versatility all highlighted as reasons why Jurgen Klopp has been an admirer.
No approach seems to have been made at any point, though, with the Reds opting against major signings this summer even while Werner had just one season left on his deal at RB Leipzig.
Liverpool weren’t the only team linked, with Bayern Munich at one point considered certainties to land him this summer.
But now he has extended his deal with Leipzig, signing until 2023—but with German publication Kicker reporting a “moderate” release clause of €30 million (£27.5 million).
Celebrating his new deal, Werner immediately started and scored for Leipzig in their Bundesliga game on Sunday.

While the new contract means he’ll continue at Leipzig this summer in the end, even with the European transfer window not yet shut, the release clause will only fuel speculation that he has a deal in place to leave next year.
The €30m fee is in no way prohibitive to any top European club, while it still guarantees his current side a reasonable income from a still-likely sale.
Werner has two goals in two league games at the start of this season and should he improve on last term’s total of 19 in all competitions, he’ll be seen as a bargain option for several teams come next summer.
