Van Dijk unsure how he will stop ‘best in the world’ Messi

Virgil van Dijk has discussed the task that faces him when Liverpool face Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.

Liverpool face Barca in the final four of Europe’s premier competition after easing past Porto in the quarter-final.

Barca beat English opposition in Manchester United to make it this far, with Lionel Messi starring in both games.

Van Dijk will face perhaps his toughest test yet in trying to thwart the Argentine, and says it will require a team effort.

“I don’t know, we’ll see,” he told Viasport when asked how he would counter Messi.

“It’s going to be a great matchup for all of us. Obviously we’re very happy to be in the semi-final again, and that’s the only thing I can say.

“It’s about doing it all together, it’s never one versus one, it’s never just me against a particular striker. It’s always us against everyone, and I think that’s the only way we can defend well.

“It’s going to be very hard, and I think he’s the best player in the world, but we’ll see.”
